Starry Knight Unitarian Universalist Church in Plymouth NH
by Mary Maxwell, LLB, current candidate for United States Senate
Last night I found myself in church. Well, it’s the Unitarian church so not very churchy. It was happily called into use by some citizens to let the candidates speak. NH’s primary is only 5 days away -- Sept. 8. There we sat, five candidates for the one job -- a seat in the US Senate, from which the incumbent has retired. I’ll tell you below about us five.
The audience was at least 80 people from the local town, Plymouth, and it was “bipartisan.” We gave a speech, and then the maestro (maestra, Grace) ran the Q&A. One man asked a surprise question (I think he was addressing it to the whole house, not just to the five show-offs). He said “Is there anyone here who does NOT want to impeach Trump?”
Whew, did that change the tone. Most candidate meetings I attend are Republican only, and no one would ever utter the word ‘impeach.’ Well, actually, we do sometimes refer to it in this mathematical context: “We mustn’t let Dems win the House at the Midterms (the November 3, 2026 general election of Congress), because they would impeach Trump as soon as they get seated on January 3, 2027.”
As if that is the greatest horror. And as if it’s the main purpose of Repub candidates like me trying to hold down the tent in a storm!!!
Indeed, in the many articles I have published here at Substack, any mention of the “I” word, by me, was put academically, like: “You know, folks, the Constitution allows two ways to remove a president: Impeachment and the 25th Amendment.”
That fellow’s question made it possible for me to be honest.
Or do I mean it made it possible for me to be disloyal?
Either way, I now say: TRUMP MUST GO. And Repubs must stop shrinking from reality. Please, please, pleeze.
Hersh on Debt and a 1930s-like Depression
This morning I opened my emails and found that Seymore Hersh has written this:
“Today we have a malicious childlike president who is bankrupting the United States with the war he started in Iran and who ignores one possible off-ramp after another. I was chilled this summer during a visit to Europe when an old friend, who understands the world of oil and finance and is not given to dramatics, told me that unless there are immediate changes, America will soon enter a recession that will equal or surpass the Great Depression. Trump is playing with the future as he borrows and borrows and leaves an unmanageable debt for future presidents.”
Minutes later, I get a call from a girl who has gone back to her home country and who reports that the people there “are so much more hopeful than Americans.” The guy who asked the impeachment question clearly brought relief and thus hope, to us all.
Maxwell, Maxwell, Manzur, Danley, and Alciere
Now I’ll mention two of the speakers. One is a millennial, age 35, and rides a motorcycle. His first name is Maxwell, how confusing! (“Will you be voting for Maxwell his year?”) His last name is Sall. He’s a Democrat, and was precise about his proposed policies. Very intelligent. Another was a tall guy, featuring blue jeans and a black leather jacket – and he’s Republican (What’s the world coming to!). He practically screamed hope. Age 67, a former military pilot. See his erudite website at SkyDanley2026.com
Two others were there: Tom Alciere, a Republican who runs every year, usually on a religious theme, and Krishma Manzur, Democrat from Bangladesh, a microbiologist, age 37. In fact she was absent but her manager spoke on her behalf. Believe me, all 5 of us are on the go, to improve this country -- but we get almost no coverage in the media.
This is because we are up against two “quasi-incumbents.” One is Chris Pappas who has held a Dem seat in the House of Reps, and the other is John Sununu, who six years ago occupied a Senate seat. His bro was a recent governor of NH and his Dad was White House Chief of Staff for Senior Bush. I imagine the most that any media reporter would dare criticize him about is that he combs his hair the wrong way. That he is a WEF biggie (Chair of Finance) is not mentioned. “It doesn’t exist.”
Offramp from the Highway to Misery
I am truly stuck as to how to get over this blacklisting (ongoing, in my case, for 20 years). But anyway, during my talk I mentioned that I wrote a song about the Iran war, and after the meeting four young women in the foyer asked me to sing it. They seemed to like it, so I am going to post it again here (reduced from 3 verses to 2). I wish someone else would write one with more punch. Sometimes a song can capture a situation and reveal the absurdity of our acceptance of a great wrong.
Song by Mary Maxwell to the tune of “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina…” [The original is from 1922 and therefore out of copyright. I make mine public domain.]
MILLIONS OF LIVES AT STAKE
1. All will come asunder, from our February blunder. In the land of oil.
What could be as crazy, as a Congress that’s so lazy, it abjures all toil.
When our elected leader, signs an M.O.U.
Americans think he means it. I did. How ’bout you?
Then he gets all surly, when the dew is pearly, early. And sends missiles galore.
Other nations join the fray, and so the price we’ll have to pay, Might be World War.
If we get Aladdin’s lamp for only a day, make Feb’ry twenty-eight go away.
Imagine our reputation if we “destroy a civilization” in the morning.
2. God didn’t give the U.S.A., a blanket right to have its way, No ifs, ands, or buts.
It’s time now to be brothers, we’ll all be facing hunger, No matter what.
When you look at history, back to ancient times,
Tribes notice very quickly. All of the other side’s crimes.
You know they’ll quash immunity. And it’s curtains for impunity! Better not be fake.
T’wasn’t nukes that sent us in. We did commit a big, big sin. A sad mistake.
Pay attention, citizens, and do what you can, Ask the best from every woman and man. Then we’ll start a fresh new climb, with solidar-i-ty and spine. In the morning.
Here is the piano copy (but I recommend you play it in key of A, not C):
Here is Al Jolson, but use only his Verse 1 tune. His later verses differ from my tune.
Long story short: I called the song “Millions of Lives at Stake”. But I should have called it “Trump Must Go.”
And now I add this: I think Trump is not acting “from himself.” I think another entity gets inside him and makes him do what he does. So they BOTH must go.
This is an EMERGENCY. Millions of lives are at stake, and that includes yours.
